Forum: movies Subject: 720X486 availability?

I have downloaded around 20 public domain films using FTP. I consisitently have downloaded the file of largest size (typically the MPEG1 or MPEG2, and they are all 320X240. I read on this site that most of the footage here is available in full NTSC 720X486 format. Am I doing something incorrectly? If so, anyone have suggestions as to how to get these files in 720? If not, does anyone know of any way to get a copy of these film on tape?

Thanks to anyone who may be able to help.

Most of the recent MPEG2 files I've downloaded from the archives are in the DVD-compliant dimension of 720X480, the DV and DVD standard.

Quite a few of the earlier films posted at the archive have MPEG2 files conforming to the SVCD standard of 480X480. You can expand these to DV specs with VEGAS or PREMIERE or any capable video editing program. The 480 original horizontal pixels, when scaled to 720, will cause some temporal artifacts with horizontal movement, but it's not a huge deal.

I can't speak for the archive, but I suspect redigitizing the old films may not be a priority. I would rather see new PRELINGER and AV GEEKS films rather than re-transferred old entries..

Many of the films I downloaded were from the Prelinger library, which makes me think I'm doing something incorrectly. I opened the FTP link, chose the file that was largest, typically 250megs to 550megs, and then copied to my HD. When opening and "getting info", however, they are all 320X240. Should I be using some sort of conversion software after downloading?

Not necessarily. All the MPEG2 Prelinger films I've seen - and that's quite a few - have been either 480X480 or 720X480. You may want to stick to http downloading with a download manager such as Download Accelerator Pro. That way you'll be certain to click on the correct link to get an MPEG2. Or, you could take careful note of the filename to which an http link points before grabbing it via ftp.
